Description
What is EGDS?
Ethylene Glycol Distearate, also written as EGDS or EGD, is a diester made from ethylene glycol and stearic acid. It is the most widely used pearlizing agent in personal care manufacturing. You will find it in shampoos, body washes, facial cleansers, hand washes, creams, and lotions. The EGDS chemical works by forming tiny crystal platelets inside the formula. These platelets catch light and create a beautiful pearlescent glow when the product is poured or shaken.
Why Formulators Use EGDS
- Pearlizing and Opacifying Performance: EGDS produces a rich, creamy, and stable pearlescent effect. It makes products look premium and expensive. It performs consistently even in hard water, which is important for manufacturing across different cities in Pakistan.
- Safe and Mild: EGDS is rated very safe by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR). Human tests with 2 to 5 percent in shampoos showed no irritation or sensitization. That is why it is preferred for everyday products like shampoos, hand washes, and body washes for all skin types.
- Works Well With Other Ingredients: EGDS is compatible with the most common surfactants, thickeners, and preservatives used in cosmetic production. It pairs well with:
- Cocamidopropyl Betaine (CAPB) (for foam and mildness)
- Cocamide DEA or MEA (for better pearl formation and viscosity)
- Sodium Chloride (NaCl) (for extra thickening if needed)
- Citric Acid (to adjust pH)
- Cost-Efficient at Scale: You only need small amounts of the EGDS chemical to create a big visual impact. As your production volume increases, the EGD price per batch stays low. Our tiered pricing makes it even better for larger orders.
How to Use EGDS in Your Formulations
Handling Note:
EGDS is a solid flake at room temperature. Warm and melt it gently to 65 to 75 degrees Celsius before adding to your batch. It must be fully melted and well dispersed in the hot phase. High-speed mixing after cooling should be avoided because it breaks the crystal structure needed for good pearl. Slow cooling with gentle stirring gives the best pearlescent shine.
Extent of Use, By Type of Product:
| Product Type | EGDS in Formula (by weight) |
| Shampoo (pearly) | 1% to 3% |
| Shampoo (volumizing or conditioning) | 1.5% to 4% |
| Body Wash / Shower Gel | 1% to 2.5% |
| Liquid Hand Wash | 0.5% to 2% |
| Facial Cleanser (mild) | 0.5% to 1.5% |
| Creams and Lotions | 1% to 4% |
| Baby Wash | 0.5% to 1% |
Target pH:
For hair products, adjust the pH between 5.5 and 6.5, and for skin products, between 5.0 and 6.0. EGDS works best in this range. Use citric acid to lower the pH if needed.
Formulation Build Order:
- Heat the water phase or surfactant mix to 65 to 75 degrees Celsius.
- Add EGDS flakes and stir gently until fully melted and clear.
- Add co-surfactants like CAPB or Cocamide DEA or MEA.
- Cool down slowly with low shear stirring to below 40 degrees to develop the pearl crystals.
- Adjust viscosity with sodium chloride solution if required (1 to 3%).
- Adjust pH using citric acid.
- Add fragrance, preservative, and conditioning agents at room temperature.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the difference between EGDS and EGMS?
A: EGDS is Ethylene Glycol Distearate. It gives a stronger and more pronounced pearlescent effect. EGMS is the mono version that gives a milder satin look and melts at a slightly lower temperature.
Q: Can I add EGDS directly to a cold or room-temperature mix?
A: No. The EGDS chemical must be melted at 65 to 75 degrees Celsius and added to a hot phase. Adding it cold will not give proper dispersion or the desired pearl effect.
Q: Is EGDS safe for baby shampoos and sensitive skin products?
A: Yes. The CIR safety assessment confirms EGDS is safe at recommended use levels. It showed no irritation or sensitization in human tests and is widely used in mild and baby formulations.
Q: Does EGDS reduce foam or lather in shampoos or body washes?
A: No. EGDS provides excellent pearl and opacity with very little impact on foam performance when used at the correct levels. Your products will still produce rich lather.
Q: How should I store EGDS chemical?
A: Store EGDS in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the container sealed after each use. Shelf life is 2 years under proper conditions.
