Description

What is SLES 70%?

Sodium Laureth Sulfate, also written as SLES, is an anionic surfactant. It is the most widely used primary cleansing agent in personal care manufacturing. You will find it used in shampoos, body washes, facial cleansers, hand washes, and liquid soaps.

The 70% concentrate grade means you are working with a highly active, low-water form of SLES. Compared to ready-diluted 28% or 30% grades, the 70% version gives you direct control over how much active surfactant goes into your formula. This implies cost efficiency as well as reduced shipping weight per batch and flexibility in multiple types of products.

Why Formulators Use SLES 70%

  • Strong Foaming Performance: SLES 70% produces a rich, dense, and stable foam. It is very consistent in its performance even in hard water, which is crucial when you are manufacturing throughout different cities in Pakistan.
  • Milder Than SLS: SLES is made by ethoxylating SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate). This process reduces irritation potential significantly. That is why SLES is preferred over SLS for daily-use products like everyday shampoos, hand washes, and body washes.
  • Ingestion: Works Well With Other Ingredients: SLES 70% is compatible with the most common co-surfactants, thickeners, and preservatives used in cosmetic production. It pairs well with:
    • Cocamidopropyl Betaine (CAPB) (for mildness & foam boosting)
    • Cocamide DEA or MEA (viscosity & foam stability)
    • Sodium Chloride (NaCl) (a simple and low-cost thickener)
    • Citric Acid (to adjust pH values/prejudice)
  • Cost-Efficient at Scale: Because you are buying 70% active concentrate, you get more surfactant per kilogram compared to diluted grades. As the volume of your production increases, the cost per unit of active matter is low.

How to Use SLES 70% in Your Formulations

Handling Note:

SLES 70% is a thick paste at room temperature. Warm it up gently to 40 to 50 degrees Centigrade before weighing and blending. High-speed mixing should be avoided as it introduces air bubbles in the product.

Extent of Use, By Type of Product:

Product TypeSLES 70% in Formula (by weight)
Shampoo (standard)10% to 15%
Shampoo (volumising)12% to 18%
Body Wash / Shower Gel8% to 14%
Liquid Hand Wash10% to 16%
Facial Cleanser (mild)4% to 8%
Baby Wash3% to 6%

Target pH:

For hair products, adjust the pH between 5.5 and 6.5, and for skin products, between 5.0 and 6.0. To reduce the pH, use citric acid or lactic acid.

Formulation Build Order:

  1. Heat water phase until 40 to 50 degrees Celsius.
  2. Add SLES 70% with gentle stirring until fully dissolved.
  3. Add co-surfactants, e.g., CAPB or Cocamide DEA.
  4. Cool down to below 40 degrees before the addition of heat-sensitive actives.
  5. Treat viscosity using a solution of sodium chloride (1 to 3%).
  6. Adjust pH using citric acid.
  7. Add fragrance, preservative, and conditioning agents (at room temperature).

What You Can Make With SLES 70%

  • Shampoos – VC, AK, AD, LR, CC & DK
  • Body washes and shower gels
  • Liquid hand washes
  • Mild facial cleansers of lesser concentration using amphoteric co-surfactants
  • Bases of 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between SLES 70% and SLES 28%?

A: SLES 70% is a concentrate with 70% active surfactant, while SLES 28% is pre-diluted. You get more active matter per kilogram given the 70% grade, and therefore, it’s a better cost efficiency in manufacturing.

Q: Can I use SLES 70% directly without diluting?

A: No. SLES 70% must always be diluted and blended into your water phase. The use of it undiluted will have an impact on the stability of your formula and the final pH.

Q: Is SLES 70% safe for daily use products like shampoo?

A: Yes, at levels of recommended use, SLES is milder than SLS and is widely used in daily-use personal care products across the industry.

Q: Does SLES 70% work in hard water?

A: Yes. SLES performs consistently in hard water, which makes it suitable for manufacturing and end-use across different regions of Pakistan.

Q: How should I store SLES 70%?

A: Store in a cool and dry place, protected from direct sunlight. Shelf life: 2 years if it is stored under the proper conditions. Always keep the container carefully sealed after each use.
